GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will soon launch one of the world’s first automated multi-state travel documents (CARIPASS) for use within 10 member states that will not only make regional travel easier, but help crack down on identity theft and illegal migration.Participating countries will include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Cable & Wireless Communications Plc agreed to buy 51 percent of Bahamas Telecommunications Company for $210 million to prop up its ailing Caribbean business. The stock rose as much as 3.6 percent in London trading.
The company has already signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the government of the Bahamas.
Cable and Wireless says their aim is to complete the transaction in the first quarter of 2011. The company and the government will work together to complete due diligence, finalize terms and obtain regulatory clearances.
